A very somber looking Vin Diesel posted this on his Facebook page: “New Roads Ahead,” Furious 8 April 14.
Although no year is on the poster I assume it will be out in 2017. Months ago Universal said the 9th and 10th installments would be released in April of 2019 and 2021 respectively. The tagline “One last ride” was used in the final performance of Paul Walker in Furious 7. Walker’s brothers, Cody and Caleb, stepped in as his double for the film’s final scenes. Charlize Theron and Scott Eastwood are set to join the franchise and the movie will also feature The Rock Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris Bridges, Eva Mendes, Kurt Russell, Kristofer Hivju, Jason Statham and more.
Plans for the eighth installment was first announced in March 2015 when Diesel appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and announced that the film would be set in New York. Preparations for the film began immediately after the release of Furious 7 (2015) with Diesel, Morgan and producer Neal H. Moritz re-signing. After setting an initial release date in the same month, casting took place between April and June of 2015, with the remaining cast yet to be rounded out. In October 2015, Gray, best known for directing Straight Outta Compton (2015), was announced to direct the film in place of James Wan, who had directed the previous film. Principal photography began in March 2016 in Mývatn, Iceland, with other filming locations set to include Atlanta and New York.
Fast and Furious 8, 9 and 10 aren’t the only films new that Universal has planned for the franchise. It was recently revealed that plans are underway for both Fast and Furious spinoffs and prequels.
