Former Destiny’s Child lead singer, Beyonce Gisselle Knowles Carter celebrates her 34th birthday today. Born and reared in Houston, Texas, the songwriter, record producer, actress, dancer and businesswoman has risen to stardom as one of the most celebrated music icons in the world; selling nearly 120 million records as a solo artist and 60 million records with Destiny’s Child.
“I wanted to sell a million records, and I sold a million records I wanted to go platinum; I went platinum. I’ve been working nonstop since I was 15. I don’t even know how to chill out,” says Mrs. Carter, who has won 20 Grammy Awards and has been listed in Forbes Magazine as the world’s “Most Powerful Female Musician of 2015.”
Previously managed by her father, Matthew Knowles, Destiny’s Child was often referred to as one of the best girl groups of all time. Since the disbandment of the singing group in 2005, Beyonce has ventured into a mega–wattage solo performer, garnering her the description as a “modern–day feminist.” Throughout her 18 year career, Beyonce’s songs, which have often been characterized by love, relationships, monogamy and female sexuality, empower as well as instruct.
“I truly believe that women should be financially independent from their men. And let’s face it, money gives men the power to run the show,” says the wife of music artist Jay–Z. “It gives men the power to define value. Power means happiness. Power means hard work and sacrifice.”
“Beyonce is life,” says Robin Lewis of South Carolina, “I’m sorry, but she’s not just a singer. Beyonce is a movement. It’s why I never miss any of her shows. I just love her.”
On stage, the fashion designer -often referred to as Queen B- has executed such dynamic performances, she has often led audience members to sing her praises as one of the world’s best entertainers in popular music. The mother to Blue Ivy sums up her life by saying, “For me it’s about the way I carry myself and the way I treat other people. My relationship and how I feel about God and what He does for me, is something deeply personal. It’s where I came from, my family… I was brought up in a religious household and that’s very important to me. I feel like I’ve accomplished a lot. I feel like I’m highly respected; which is more important than any award or any amount of records.”
