In recent years we have come to see President Barack Obama as part of the family. He and his family have danced and sung their way into our hearts and given us a reason to hope. As we as a nation prepare to usher this family from the White House, let us reflect on a few things that will remain in our hearts and minds as we bid farewell to the Obama family.
If you’re walking down the right path and you’re willing to keep walking, eventually you’ll make progress…Barack Obama
Think back to how we as a nation felt the day we found out he won. The country was in a frenzy and there were some very happy centurians that never thought they would live to see an African American man grace the White House. We came to know Sasha and Malia grow into graceful young women and welcomed the White House Dogs as well. Michelle, of FLOTUS as we all have come to know her, gave us a grace and style that has not been seen in quite sometime. She showed us how to be fashionable on our own dollar and how to get out and get healthy. Her initiatives, her personality, her style and her smile kept us all ready for the next move. Between her and her husband, we watched them dance and sing and show us what it means to cherish the one you love. I fell in love with the fact that POTUS was never shy about letting others know that she was his reason to keep going.
As we all watched the farewell address, we cried as our president recalled the past eight years in office. What truly brought the waterworks was his dedication to his wife, his family and his friends the Bidens. I really felt like I was saying good bye to a family friend during the hour long speech. Days later as another final act as President, Obama bestowed on the Vice President the Presidential Medal of Freedom. I really thought Joe was gonna collapse!
To Barack and Michelle and family: Thank you for making us truly appreciate 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. Thank you for making us feel like we mattered and also for treating us like family. Thank you for your swagger, your style, your can do attitude and for never skipping a beat. Thank you for never backing down from a fight and for standing tall during the fight. Thank you for bringing us laughter and joy. We learned with you and we cried with you during these past eight years. You will be missed.
