Rick Ross has always made dope music…

Whether he was a C.O. or REALLY the man with the kilos, Rick Ross has always made dope music. Trilla, Deeper Than Rap & Teflon Don are the reasons I’m a Rozay fan.

Rather You Than Me starts off as a classic…

The first 3 songs on Rather You Than Me suggests this album is gonna be classic. Rick Ross opened the album with joints like; Apple Of My Eye (feat. Raphael Saadiq), Santorini Greece and the controversial Birdman diss Idols Become Rivals. All three of those songs abandoned rap’s currently popular ‘trap’ sound. But, Ross immediately kills the vibe he set by following up with the basic “Trap Trap Trap” (feat. Young Thug & Wale). Dead Presidents (feat. Future, Jeezy & Yo Gotti) is okay. I imagine it probably goes in the club. But, it doesn’t do much for me as an album cut.

Then, it goes bad…

The next song, She On My D**k (feat. Drop Top Wop b.k.a. Gucci Mane) is possibly the worst song on the album. To add insult to injury, the song after it, I Think She Like Me with Ty Dolla $ign, practically relays the same message but WAY better than “She On My D**k”.

False hope…

Track 8 made my eyes light up soon as I seen it on the track list, laughing but very serious. Powers That Be, Featuring Nas? SIGN ME UP! (I thought). But, this song is actually very underwhelming when you take into consideration previous classic Ross/Nas collabs like “Usual Suspects”, “Triple Beam Dreams” & “Accident Murderers”.

But, it gets better…

Next few songs are a good look. Solo cuts Game Ain’t Based On Sympathy and Scientology are examples of Ross’ superb beat selection I’ve come accustomed to since Port Of Miami. On both songs he’s kinda all over the place lyrically. But when dissected, you’ll find some jewels in there. Lamborghini Doors with Meek Mill & Anthony Hamilton is one of my favorite tracks on the album. I actually enjoyed Meek on this one. Triple Platinum featuring Scrilla is a good track leading into one of the albums highlights. The next chapter in the Maybach Music series, Maybach Music V has a very dope feature from Dej Loaf. This song reminds me of Jay/Beyonce On The Run a little bit, but its ill. Last record, “Summer Seventeen” with yet ANOTHER Yo Gotti feature is cool. Not great. But, I can see it rocking the clubs this spring/summer.

I give it 3.75 stars

In conclusion, this is a good album. Not his best or his worst. But a good addition to his catalog, nonetheless. I give it 3.75 stars.
