Radio Hosts Refer to Whitney Houston as “Crack Ho”
Tuesday afternoon listeners of KFI AM 640 in Los Angeles got an earful when the two hosts of The John and Ken Show, John Kobylt and Kenneth Chiampou, went in on the recent and dearly departed Whitney Houston. The two shock jocks made comical commentary about the iconic songstress’s well-publicized and long-suffering battle with drugs and alcohol, referring to the beloved pop diva as a “crack ho” in the process. As Whitney would say, “ohhhhhh hell to tha nawww!”
The two offending jocks were suspended for 10 days expecting to return to the air on Monday, February 27th. While on the air, Kenneth Chiampou jokes, “At some point you’re just sick of it all, and so is everybody else in the industry; all her friends and hangers on; everybody who knew had to deal with her. It’s like ah Jesus… here comes the crack ho again, what’s she gonna do ah look at that she’s doin handstands next to the pool. Very good crack ho… after while everybody’s exhausted. And then you find out she’s dead. It’s like really; took this long.” Wow. Listen for yourself here.
As you can imagine, the offensive and disrespectful remarks made by the two have caused quite an uproar amongst Houston’s fandom. The former national program director for Syndication One and founder of US Talk Network, Lee Michaels has reportedly blasted the two jocks publicly by saying, “this was an abuse of the airwaves. If I were the program director at that station they would have been pulled off the air immediately. Their comments were callous, indecent, unprofessional, and unnecessary.” Really…you think?!
As far back as I can remember I’ve been told that you don’t speak ill of the dead. These two attention grabbers couldn’t even wait til she was in the ground and her family and legions of fans have had time to grieve and mourn…sheesh. Mass media outlets have made sure to keep us abreast of Whitney’s antics. That’s how they sell papers but to belittle the woman’s legacy by referring to her as a “crack ho”? That was out of line.
The talk show hosts have issued this statement of apology via the station’s website: “We made a mistake, and we accept the station’s decision. We used language that was inappropriate, and we sincerely apologize to our listeners and to the family of Ms. Houston.” Notice they didn’t apologize for the remarks…just their choice of words. These two are no strangers to controversy or complaints having recently been called on the carpet by the Federal Election Commission. Just drama!
