I have been dating a really nice guy for the last six months, and I am interested in having a future with him. I just found out that I am being promoted to a new position at my job. It will require me to move to our corporate office in New York. Like I said before I am really interested in creating a future with him. I am a bit concerned about approaching him about a long distance relationship. I already know that I am not required to work weekends and holidays. He did explain to me before that he has been in a long distance relationship and it didn’t work out. How should I approach him if he has been burned before?
Dear Long distance,
I understand exactly what you are speaking of; I too have been in shoes. I tried and failed. It was my fault the first time, I was simply not ready. I was 18 years old fresh out of high school and was still trying to hold on to my high school sweetheart. On the second the relationship, he said he was willing to work on it. A very long story short, it didn’t work and I am glad I go to see the real person he was before uprooting my life.
I simply suggest that you be honest with him, tell him how you feel. You never know, he just might feel the same way about you. If he sees a future with you, he might be willing to wait or even move with you. The amazing thing about having corporate jobs you can transfer within the company; even if he works for himself this will give him the chance to expand his market. You already know that you don’t have to work weekends. Based on where you are from and the location you are moving to; I say use those frequent flyer miles. I would even say to you that you all meet half way. Explore the options. The worst he can say is what “No”.
You said that he was burned by someone previous to you with a long distance relationship. How? Do you think you would do the same thing this other person did to him? I will tell you that long distance relationships are hard work, but they can be worked on. Both parties have to be willing to make it work, as well as have a level a trust that is out of this world. If you both feel that you can make it work; then it will work out for you.
I hope everything works out for you, keep me up to date
